What Is A Balanced Life?
Though everyone talks about work/life balance and bemoans the
lack of
balance in their lives, a balanced life is a very personal
determination. A
life
that feels balanced for one
person may be terribly unbalanced for
another. Life balance is a feeling, a feeling that life is right. The
only
person who can make that determination is you - this is your life. Hear
Jerry's response to an interviewer's question, "What
is life
balance?"
How does a person get a balanced life?
Because life balance is a personal evaluation based on the feeling that life is well balanced, meaningful, and right, the path to a balanced life must be paved with the fundamentals that make life right. I call these fundamentals the five P's: Purpose, Passions, Powers, Principles, and Perspectives. Listen to Jerry describe the five P's.
What about time management?
Time management, along with other aids such as learning to say no and employer flex-time are helpful tools, but aren't sufficient in and of themselves to bring balance to life. There are five life skills that will help you attain and maintain a balanced life, though these are most effective when your life is well aligned with the fundamentals, the five P's.
How does a Balanced Life feel?
When life is balanced it feels right. It feels like things are the way they should be. Despite the normal ups and downs we all have in life, when life is balanced you are an active participant in life's experiences, fully engaged and finding meaning in what you do and who you are.
The Unbalanced Life
In contrast the unbalanced life just doesn't feel right.
You may feel
overwhelmed by one of your life's roles, perhaps by work. Or you may
feel
that something is missing, like there's a hole in your life. The
unbalanced
life lacks meaning and purpose, and you may feel depressed, lethargic,
and
saddened that there isn't more to it than this.
